The Cover of LIFE imageAnnouncing The Whidbey Playhouse Auditions for:                     Cash on Delivery at Whidbey Playhouse

     February 8-9, 2009
 7 pm  Main Stage

       a British farce

Dear Mary,

The Whidbey Playhouse announces auditions for the Michael Cooney British farce, "Cash on Delivery".  Directors Bob Hendrix and Melissa Bridges seek six men and four women for this hilarious comedy.  Perusal scripts are available at the Whidbey Playhouse office.

Auditions will be held on Monday, February 8, 7 PM, and Tuesday, February 9,  7 PM, at the Whidbey Playhouse, 730 S.E. Midway Blvd in Oak Harbor.  The play will run April 9 - May 1.

For further information, contact the Playhouse at 360-679-2237, office@whidbeyplayhouse.com, or visit the website at www.whidbeyplayhouse.com.
Auditions will include cold readings from the script.  Auditioners should dress casually.  They may be asked to demonstrate some physical humor such as mimicking getting hit in the head with a door.
This fast paced physical comedy concerns a con artist who has duped the welfare authorities for years by claiming every type of benefit for the innumerable people he claims live at his address.  This scam nets him tens of thousands tax free.  Just when he decides to kill off many of the imaginary dole recipients because matters are getting a bit too risky, welfare investigators show up.  Some make inquiries about what is going on while others offer additional benefits for which he has not applied.  To outwit the investigators, the con artist is forced to enlist other creative characters to play the unfortunate souls he's created.

Tickets are  on sale one month prior to opening night.

Contact Whidbey Playhouse Business Office at 360-679-2237 during the hours of 11-3 Tues. and Fri. or 11-6 Wed. and Thurs.  for further information, show dates, group discounts, and reservations, or email at office@whidbeyplayhouse.com or check the website at www.whidbeyplayhouse.com. The Whidbey Playhouse is wheelchair and handicapped accessible.

Season Tickets can be purchased for the rest of the season for just $40 for seniors (60+) or Youth (4-17); and just $44 for adults.  Three more great shows for one low price!  Save $$ over the regular show price and secure your seats for the rest of the year or purchase one of our Open Season tickets to ensure you see the shows and still get the $$ savings.  Call 360-679-2237, or visit us at The Whidbey Playhouse to hear more about our exciting season of shows.

Cash on Delivery Character Descriptions

ERIC SWAN – (30-45) – He has been defrauding the DSS for two years by claiming benefits for an army of fictitious lodgers.  Quick on his feet with tall tales, Eric is trying to be an honest guy, having guilt over deceiving the government.  He is a bit high strung.  Auditioners should be adept at physical humor.

LINDA SWAN – (30’s) - Eric’s wife, who is practical, down to earth and knows nothing about what Eric has been doing.

NORMAN McDONALD – (35-45) - A shoe salesman who is Eric’s friend and lodger, Norman has no idea Eric is claiming benefits in his name.  He is a slightly dim, easily flustered man.  Norman should be able to lift/drag an unconscious Uncle George.

MR. JENKINS – (50’s) - A Department of Social Security inspector, checking out Eric’s situation, Jenkins is probably less intelligent than he thinks.  He is firm and stern but a bit clumsy.

UNCLE GEORGE – (60-70) - Eric’s cooperative, chirpy old uncle.  He is happy with life and a story teller; has a physically demanding role.  The character is banged in the head repeatedly and spends most of the second act unconscious on stage.

SALLY CHESSINGTON – (30’s) - Young, over anxious bereavement counselor, who is kind, caring, and helpful, Sally is mistaken for Norman’s fiancée.  She must be able to lift a stretcher with a dummy on it and will be chasing the dead Uncle George around when he makes his escape.

DOCTOR CHAPMAN – (50’s) - A ‘first-day-on-the-job’ marriage guidance counselor, Chapman is overwhelmed, and tries to be understanding.

MR. FORBRIGHT – (Over 40) - A ghoulish undertaker, Forbright must be able to lift a stretcher with a dummy on it and will be chasing the dead uncle George around when he makes his escape.

MS. COWPER – (over 40) - A humorless DSS inspector, this severe, large busted bureaucrat will be fondled on stage by Eric who believes that she is Norman in drag.

MISS DIXON – (30’s) - Norman’s girl-next-door fiancée
